DBMS Pipe/alert packages

Is anyone out there using the provided packages DBMSPIPE or DBMSALRT? I'm setting up an application which will need to use some type of messaging to initiate a TCP/IP transaction to update a remote database.

I will either need to build a table driven process or use one of the mentioned procedures (preferably DBMSPIPE to keep it asynch.) to control the process.

If anyone has used either of these procedures to trigger an action, especially from a UNIX daemon type process, please let me know. Please e-mail me at 72020.101_at_compuserve.com since I don't have direct access to the internet. I'll have any results posted here.
