Deferred-mode linking options

In the "Programmer's Guide to the OCIs" page 2-15 it says "Refer to the ORACLE installation or user's guide for your operating system for information on how to deferred mode linking." In my installation guide (NCR), there is no mention of deferred mode linking. Did I miss something in my installation guide? Is this situation unique to NCR or did the tech writing geniuses at the big O simply forget to resolve that reference?

The problem I had is that my database is in version 6 which doesn't support deferred mode but my libraries are version 7 which use deferred mode by default and I can't find anything that says how to do non-deferred mode. When I ran my OCI app, I got a message about not being allowed to use ORACLE 7 compatibility mode against an ORACLE 6 database.
