Several people have commented in this thread on backup and recovery strategies.

After reading the ORACLE V6 DBA Guide, but admittedly not being able to quote chapter and verse off the top of my head, my understanding was that whether a backup is hot or cold has no effect on the type of recovery you can perform. Assuming you have all the backed up files (data files, control files, redo log files) you will be able to do either a full rollforward or a point-in-time. The exact details of the recovery procedures may differ, for hot vs. cold backups, but you can surely do point-in-time recovery from either type of backup, can't you?

Could any Oracle staffers who might be reading this give us all a definitive answer?

David.
