Thank you for your interest in the activities of the MOSES group.
The MOSES group is pleased to announce the release of its first suite of papers which look at defining requirements, policies and procedures for UNIX Data Centers.

The MOSES (Massive Open Systems Environment Standard) Group is an international consortium of six large Open Systems Shops -- U S West NewVector Group Inc., British Telecom, Millipore, Burlington Coat Factory, Oracle Corporation MIS, and Sequent Computers MIS. The group aims to define standards, policies, procedures, and tool specifications/recommendations for effectively running large Open System Environments.

The initial suite of papers cover the following topics:

  1. About Moses... Massive Open Systems Environment Standard
  2. Service Level Support Agreements
  3. Event Monitoring and Alarming
  4. Backup and Recovery Requirements
  5. Change Management
  6. Benchmark Standards/Metrics and Capacity Planning
  7. Data Archiving Requirements
  8. Job Scheduling

The papers are written for MIS professionals who operate large datacenters and open systems suppliers who develop toolsets for such environments. While the papers have a UNIX frame of reference, they are largely applicable to other operating systems and databases as well.

Membership to the MOSES group is currently closed. The forum for discussing the papers as well as associating with MOSES related activities will be the UNIX Data Center Sub-SIG -- a Special Interest Group of Users wishing to receive and share technical, marketing and vendor information about UNIX issues. The Sub-SIG is part of the International Oracle UNIX SIG. Information about the SIG can be obtained via Internet from the following E-mail address -- "tudor!udcsig-request_at_sun.com" or by writing to:

        IOUSIG -- MOSES Group

Instructions for obtaining Papers:

There are three methods to obtain papers and they're listed below. The papers will all be in Postscript format.

Method 1. Via a Mail List Server for users with access to Internet.

Send an E-mail message to the following address:

     "tudor!mosespapers_at_ames.arc.nasa.gov"

Place in the SUBJECT of your message the word HELP and you will receive a complete instruction sheet on how to use the list server. Please do *NOT* place any text in the message! Your E-mail address will be picked up automatically.

     For example:

     To: tudor!mosespapers_at_ames.arc.nasa.gov
     Subject: HELP

Method 3. For users with access to CompuServ

The MOSES Group papers have been posted to the "reference library" area of the "Oracle Forum" on CompuServ. This is a public forum with access available to all CompuServ users.

To obtain the papers:

Access the Oracle Forum on CompuServ with the command "GO ORACLE"

Navigate to the Data Libraries: LIB 1

Locate the files MOSIDX.txt (the index file) as well as the papers MOS000.ps through MOS007.ps via the BROWSE command. The index file is a text file which contains abstracts for the entire suite of papers.

Download the files via the DOWNLOAD command.

Method 4. As a published Book. (Orderable after August 15, 1993)

All the MOSES papers will be included in this book entitled "Perfecting the UNIX Data Center -- Requirements and Policies"

To obtain this book in the U.S., call Oracle Documentation at:

   1-800-252-0303

and request part number A10925-1.

The cost of each book will be U.S. $15 (plus shipping and handling) payable by a major credit card or a Purchase Order.

Address for Comments

The MOSES Group would appreciate receiving your comments about the papers. Comments may be sent to the IOUSIG postal address listed above or E-mailed to:

      "tudor!mpcomments_at_ames.arc.nasa.gov"

Thank You once again. We look forward to hearing your comments through the UNIX Data Center Sub-SIG. Once the next batch of papers gets completed later this year, the SIG will notify you of their availability.

       Sincerely,

       The MOSES Group

The first group of papers from the MOSES Group are now available to be retrieved via the IOUSIG mail list server. The MOSES Group is currently documenting work processes necessary to develop and run a Unix Data Center operation. These first papers are but a few of many more to come over the next years from this group.

Please send a help message to the mail list server to obtain the complete list of instructions. These instructions will give you details on how to use this public service. You do not have to be a current member of the IOUSIG or it's UDC Sub-SIG to obtain these MOSES Group papers. The UDC Sub-SIG is the public access avenue to the MOSES Group. If you wish to send comments to the MOSES Group, you will do so through the UDC Sub-SIG. The comments email address is tudor!mpcomments_at_ames.arc.nasa.go

All comments will be forwarded to the MOSES Group.
