We have taken a different approach to solving this problem. We created a front-end routine that looks up the Oracle Id/password based upon UNIX id. The primary security issue is keeping the front-end procedure hidden. People can use or not use the routine as their needs dictate. The primary reason we don't use OPS$ is that most of our users would need two Oracle accounts: <unix login> and OPS$<unix login>.
