List of Values (restrict) in query mode.

I would like to know if there is a way to qualify a LOV while in QUERY mode and also implicitly execute the query if the user actually selects a value from the LOV. We seem to be having problems in this area because the KEY_LISTVAL trigger is not being executed while in query mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
