Paulo, what kind of answer do you expect when you post this questionin comp.databases.oracle and not in comp.databases.ingres?

Well, my answer is if you want a networked, distributed, or stand-alone database on a VAX/VMS or Unix platform then Ingres has a substantial lead in most technological areas. Sybase is second. Oracle has the best marketing, by far, however. They're equal in terms of availability of third-party tools.

Why is Ingres ahead:

- full support for client-server over TCP/IP and DECnet
- by far the best support for distributed DBs using Ingres/Star
- full support for SMP (symmetric multi-processing) and clustered machines
- a very robust rules (also known as triggers) system, plus DB event
alerters, which are like triggers that call external procedures - object-management extension, and not just domains
