Many a shop became an "MS shop" due to the apparent cost of the competition. Based on recent experience and discussions with customers who are in this mode, those same shops will likely be seriously looking at the open source alternatives for the same reason. Therefore platform independance is potentially relevant for the future.
Also, I've noticed that many self-professed "MS shops" in my area are "MS shops" in the eyes of the technical people, but not in the eyes of management. Management cares about "right" and "cost", not about operating system or environment.
