There is no "required" property in a check box

maybe because with the "initial value" an the "Check Box Mapping Of Other Values" you have always a valid return from this item.

yes that's all right but the "very buggy" form designer often did not
initialize the items so you have to assign the initial value in the
pre-form or in the whe-new-form instance trigger.
