"Yeah sure. Probably you already have a crappy machine.
How often did I run into problems installing Oracle? 1 or 2 times out of 500?
Thousands of people can install it. So why advise to migrate away from Oracle. In favor of other 'toys'?

Okay, so I'm a moron and the described machine is "crappy". Very helpful and professional, Sybrand. And predictable. Well,
"predicted", actually.

Whether you agree with the fact that I'm migrating from Oracle to MS-SQL is irrelevant. It's what I'm doing and I was looking for solutions to an Installer problem; not opinions on whether or not I should do the migration. Your opinion about my choice of hardware/software for my own system is summarily dismissed.

Wouldn't matter if I were simply installing Oracle on a new machine with the intention of using it on that machine, anyway. The installer problem still exists.

PS. Not sure where you got the "why advise" bit. I wouldn't assume

everyone who comes here is simply a consultant. I'm not.

Edit: Oh, yeah. I was able to find just the necessary ODBC drivers and successfully got them installed, so my search for a solution is largely academic at this point. I'm still curious why the Installer bombs out when trying to install Oracle itself, but only curious. Don't need it anymore.
