Newbie JSP and iAS Questions - Pls Help

I am wanting some information on JSP and the software/hardware requirements for developing and deploying applications written using JSP. The app will run off an 8.1.7 database sat on Sun Solaris. The clients will be Windows and ie5.5. Not decided on App Server yet.
- On reading up on this subject it seems that you dont need iAS. You could just have an Apache webserever with the Jakarta Tomcat plug-in. Is this right? What are the advantages of deploying on iAS.
- For developing a JSP app do people recommend using Jdeveloper? It seems a bit overkill when you could really just use a text editor to write your JSP code.
