Designer 6i Install Question

[Quoted] My company is interested in upgrading our version of Designer from 1.3.2 to 6i. We've been reading about the upgrade path and we understand that we need to upgrade to 6.0 before migrating to 6i. In discussing the upgrade paths, a question came up that I thought I would pose to the group and get your thoughts.

We have a new design project coming up soon that would be nice to do in Designer 6i. However, we have not brought the old repository (1.3.2) up to 6i as yet. My question is this. Can we install a fresh instance of 6i to use for the new project and then bring the older stuff into that repository at a later time? Or would it be more prudent to do the whole upgrade to 6i at once before doing anything else?
