 You may want to check out the workspace management support in Oracle9i - it can be used as a basis for short term versioning strategies - see http://otn.oracle.com/products/workspace_mgr/content.html

I think this did exist as a download for Oracle8i from OTN prior to Oracle9i - yep, see
