It is backward compatible. But given that your database is not supported and substantially worse performance-wise than 8i ... why not take this opportunity to upgrade and be able to take advantage of so many new and useful features.
Not to mention a resume in 2002 with experience in Oracle 7.3 will be about as useful as a resume listing ALGOL and RPG2. Who's going to want to hire someone whose experience is so out of date?
