Well,there are basically 2 types of replication, Asynchronous/Synchronous. The main aim for replication is data redundancy/fail-over mostly used in mission critical systems.
Performance wise, it all depends on your configuration, systems settings, memory etc...But when one node is failing and the replication queue is building up say to about 50000++ replication transactions, you might encounter some heap memory errors..(need to solve the pproblems as fast). Sometimes solving the repilcation errors might be tedious, requires the system's business knowledge.
