Visual linkage object is a term I am not familiar with, so I can't help you there.
After doing conversions from 4.5 to 5.0 (done when 5.0 was released), and then later to 6i, and also from 4.5 straight to 6i, I have seen no issues with the 4.5-> 6i that were not evident in one of the two phases of the conversion that included 5.0.
You can convert the forms from 4.5 to 6i directly using the forms generator in a DOS script and in theory you are done with the upgrade. However, because of some small layout changes needed as part of the 6i conversion, I have found that every form ends up needing at least some small change.
