Oracle 9i Parallel Server: Requires Cluster Software?

Oracle 8i Parallel Server required that OS-specific cluster software also be installed on the server (e.g. - Sun Cluster, Microsoft Cluster Server).
Does anyone know if Oracle 9i Parallel Server (aka Real Application Cluster) no longer has this requirement? The OTN docs I found hint that this is the case.
