Oracle Forms manipulations

I am a newbee at Oracle and I have two (simple) questions. I'm creating a rectangle which, at the press of a button changes color. I have to retrieve the id, in order to manipulate its properties. What is the code I have to use in the Trigger-event of this button. Is it possible to manipulate the data in thee DB without saving: I have created a button that adds a record to a table, the last action is the commit command. But when a perform this action, the record is added, but is only shown when I save and close the form, and reopen it.
