Multiple C/C++ development enviroments on the same server

On our new server we're running a 8.1.6 C development environment. One of our developers is having problems with programs compiled under this environment running against a 8.0.5 database and wants a 8.0.5 development environment on our new server in addition to the 8.1.6 environment (different ORACLE_HOME, of course).

Does anyone have a situation like this, two different development environments on the same machine? Any problems? I'm just wondering if the different installations put stuff (libraries, etc.) in common directories like /usr/lib that'll cause problems with one and not another (one installation overwriting all or part of another installation).
