Net8 Database Alias Name getting Changed

Has anyone else had a problem with their database alias names getting chopped off? The name is long to begin with, (we use SID name _ Server name) but it doesn't seem to chop it down to 8 characters, but nine instead. Any suggestions? This just seemed to have started happening...
