Default Service Name / Instance

Hi,
I have a system with three database instances. Whenever I fire up an application or a tool it asks for a username, password, and "service".
Is there anyway to make one of the instances a default so it is already filled in? Different workstations will have different defaults.
A register file entry would be okay.
