SQL Loader and COBOL PIC S(9) fields

Oracle seems to have no problem as long as the field contains positive numbers, but let those values stray below zero and it spits out bad data msgs. I am really hoping that it is a dumb mistake on my part. How do I get the Loader to load negative data?

The data files are in ASCII, the numeric fields are all easily readable by the naked human eye (except for the records with negative numbers, in these the last digit is, so far, a 'u' or a 'p'). I think that I have tried all possible data types on the load statement, but ...
