The solution is a rather "nasty" hack, but it is recommended by Oracle.

First you make sure that the matrix item has a white background (not transparent). Then you create the zero as a boilerplate text, and place it behind the matrix item.

That way the zero will only be visible, if the matrix item does'nt print.
