Hmmm, time to be sneaky.
There is no trivial way to do what you want,...but there is always a way. Make a dummy block with 100 records in it. Probably the easiest way is to hook the block to a 100 row real table that you cook up.
However, doing inserts might also be fast enough, try both ways. (If you use a real table, make sure to execute_query with all_rows.) Of course, make the block items invisible or 0 width or something.

Then use the get_block_property('<block_name>',top_record); to get the position of the cursor.
