I have just had a similar problem to this.

My host name was set to "co060.BRITCO1" and Netscape would connect to it fine but IE4 gave me the "The request did not specify a valid virtual host." error.

To solve it I removed the ".BRITCO1" from the hostname for both the www and admin port and it now works fine form all clients.
