Insert,update performance

What values for some init file parameters would have the greatest impact on write performance? Read performance is tuned about as well as it'll get, but writing is much slower. Our database is about 20Gb in size running Oracle8 on a Dual pentium NT server. The average table size is 300,000 rows and each sees above average insert/update activity.
