I didn't try this, but I think you could try and use the srw package in format triggers to set the font attributes.

You could also consider to add a boilerplate grey background behind the records, that only prints behind every second record. This is much easier.

The only tricky thing is, you'll have to somehow distinguish between odd and even lines. (Would the pseudo column rownum do that for you?).

I don't have a database available right now, so I can't try it.
