That you might have a hardware problem is very likely. A Windows installation eats them up and hides them until a week after an important project - then POOF
The whole darm OS drops out fron underneath you without knowing why.
Hardware troubles are a lot more common then people realize. Linux nails them early, and complains. Try compiling a kernel and see what happens. If that goes fine without ewrror, thats a good first step.
Also - Red Hat is not a good system, IMO, to start with. It's suffers from a lot of vodoo installation.
