When using a Generic / Text Only printer, it is most helpful to design the reports using 'Character Mode'. This will prevent Reports from 'guessing' where to align fields. Under the report properties, click on the Character Mode tab and click on the checkbox for 'Use Character Units in Designer'. The other options can be used as needed.

The other important issue is to enter the appropriate height and width values for character mode. As far as this is concerned (in character mode), the general rule is 10 characters per inch horizontally (minus five from the total for 1/4" margins) and 6 lines per inch vertically. This would be 80 x 66 characters for a portait report (8.5" x 11") and 105 x 51 characters for a landscape report (11" x 8.5").

Using character mode in this way will show a much different grid in the layout designer and should allow you to size and align your objects appropriately, so that the printed result will be more of what you need and less of a guessing game.
