foreign functions -building DLL equivalent in UNIX

I had posted this quetion a couple of weeks ago but didn't receive any response. I need some information/documentation on how to build the Windows DLL equivalent in UNIX which I believe is called shared libraries so that my applications can access foreign functions. I would be highly obliged for any advice.
