I have had it working with Communicator 4 with the java patches. The problem sounds similar to one we had which was solved by making sure we had all the environment variables setup correctly so it knows where to find its java class libraries. I can't remember the names off the top of my head, but check the supplied docs for the env variable setup and make sure you have them correct for your system.
