My colleague, Steve Johnson, and I debated responding to this because we didn't really want to be the bearer of bad news. We had to write our own validation for each item when this case arose.
The only option we could find that might have worked without writing our own was to alter the LOV_for_validation property, based on what the user did after leaving the field. You'll have a tough time controlling all the ways a user can leave a field though, since most of the time, you won't know until after the validation fires!
