I'd say go for the Informix. It puts money in the bank *now*, and a lot of DBA issues cross product boundaries (sizing and performance issues -- the tools and procedures vary, but you'll learn what to look for). Plus, Informix is pretty popular, so it's not like you're locking yourself into a dead or dying platform.
