I do not know of any problems like you descriibed, but it sounds like this is a new install. May I suggest you review the install message logs and check on the pro*c configuration settings for any error messages or incorrect settings that might have slipped by. Also on some Unix system if you use orainst to do the install you still have to run a script called root.sh manually before you are done.
You might wish to check the install guide for special environment variables also.

Maybe someone else more familiar with the Sun environment will recognize your problem and give you a better answer.
