Forms Data Type Problem

  tmp_item_text := :system.cursor.item;

I get FRM 40735 (Value Error)

Can anybody tell me, what datatype tmp_item_text has to be? According to documentation (and to my definition) the return of system... should be CHAR. thanks for your advice,
