Without reading the other lengthy followup :
Yep, I can run 3.0.16 (the 0.16 rings a bell, but it's the last production release of 3.0 on SPARC) against RDBMS 7.3.2. Installed under the same ${ORACLE_HOME} as the RDBMS everything seemed to work OK, but there were a few niggling errors, one being the failure of the host() command, that forced us to look at installing in a separate ${ORACLE_HONE} and run via ${TWO_TASK}. Your mileage may vary if you are on another platform, etc, #include <disclaimer>
