John,

In the " C:\ORAWIN\NETWORK\ADMIN " directory, (your path may vary) you need to have properly configured *.ORA files that know about your SQL*NET configuration. TNSNAMES.ORA is one of them. The install may have given you default files that aren't configured, or stomped over your old ones.

Is your workstation the only one that can't connect, or did it prevent other users from getting in as well? If others are having trouble, did you install to a shared network directory and overwrite SQL*NET configuration files there?

Also, take a look at your "C:\WINDOWS\ORACLE.INI" file and make sure the SQL*NET entries there make sense as well. For example, you are probably using Novell Lan Workplace as your "SQL_NET" vendor, and the install commonly uses Winsock as a default.

Good luck. I found network installed tools to be a frustrating venture, the first time through.
