okay I know where the problem is and thatis setting up the device here are some things I have done so far with the installob I selected a tape drive it created a libobt.so which I symbolically linked to the Oracle_home/lib directory

it created a /dev/obt0 device

I guess there was a step I didn't do which is naming the device which I saw in the doc you are to do after creating the device... so I am close, since there is no named device when I run a rman script to tape it hangs but hey there was no library.so file in oracle lib directory or anywhere on the machine and no /dev/obt0 either with the default install... I think once I get this last

step it should work...

any thoughts
