Pick a news group (such as comp.databases.oracle.misc) and stick with it. This one could have gone to cdo.server or cdo.misc, so you are OK - just pick one only as those of us who respond generally wander through all 4 comp.databases.oracle subgroups (at different times) and reply 'all' simply results in a duplication.

That indicates that the database is not available through the method you have selected (either database is down, listener is down, or network doesn't match the install network config) - not that you have a password problem. (WHich is why you got jumped on about describing the problem - with error number, rather than interpreting it.)

Go to services (Control Panel, Admin Tools) and verify that your Listener and your database service (generally orcl) are running. If not, try to turn them on. They put a fair load on the machine, so lots of people turn them off when not in use.

If that doesn't fix it, we'll need to debug your environment.

In which case you would be quite satisfied with the ORacle Database 10g Express Edition. It has a much lighter foot print and uses less memory and CPU siunce it doesn't include the Java subsystems. All the plain SQL and PL/SQL is there, though.
