Easy, because WinXP is the next version of NT/2000. I'm surprised the Oracle Installer allowed the installation. As the OP stated he has the Win98 version of 8i, but the Oracle Installer allowed him to install it on a NT/2000/XP machine. Any decent installer should check the target machine for the right OS.
