RTFM has meant "READ THE FUCKING MANUAL" since day one... with "day one" being before 1980. It was used to express annoyance with dumb questions, but without the "in your face" aspect that actually saying "READ THE FUCKING MANUAL" brings to the game. If asked what it meant and not wanting to offend, the answer was usually "Read the FINE manual," but it was never the real meaning or intent. If we need a kinder, gentler version, it's been there all along in the form of RTM... "READ THE MANUAL." "Read the Field Manual?" Seriously? You had your leg pulled by someone who was enjoyed the situation all the more because you didn't know what it really meant.
