I have a similar situation but the application is in SQL Windows and i don't use ODBC.
However, it is fairly easy to set up via a dialup modem. You will need to use some comms
software that supports the protocol you are using (TCP or IPX etc). I am using IPX on Netware
and have tried Netware connect and a product called Wanderlink by Funk software, both of these
products need a Netware server to operate.

Another option is to use Microsoft's RAS. I have used the Win 95 version and I believe there is
an updated Win 3.11 RAS that gives the same functionality as the Win 95 version.

In both stuations, you will need to establish the link first, to do this I call the comms software
from my app.

Hope this helps
