It must have been fifteen years after that paper was written that I read anything substantial about it. Probably ten years after before I was even vaguely aware of its existence. When it came out, for sure no IBM marketeers talked about it, even though they often talked of other IBM research developments that were in fact not much more than vapour-ware.   Here in Canada, they found it politically useful to talk about VanDL (which I recall was a crippled IMS for small shops) since a Canuck lab had something or other to do with it. Like everybody I knew, I had no idea what they were talking about, but bosses assured us all that it was something important. They gave us seminars about it but I think I failed all the test questions. I found the Cincom network examples easier. Later, I came to believe it was just another bait and switch tactic. Persistence seems to be an essential part of genius, but all most of us can do is try to get one out of two!
