I run in to variations on this weird meme in a variety of contexts. "We have to minimize the number of <X>" for some value of X that costs nothing.

In comp.lang.java.programmer, it was not uncommon to have someone describe a problem that would trivially be solved by adding a new class, but they would reject that solution because "too many classes."

Perhaps the (often misdirected) habit of conserving everything in the natural world makes them feel like they have to do the same in the world of abstractions. Whatever the cause, it's annoying.
