Hey Mr. Celko. I've developed a genealogy database that relies very much on text. I'd like to have those query possibilities at hand that you mention, but in lack of anything better, I still think that the RM covers my problem space quite well. It's kludgy, no two words about that. But it works, and to my amazement, it actually is working exceedingly well.

I'd be happy to share some revelations about the data model if anyone cares to ask.
