Needless to say any commercial product that contains deprecated syntax will hold on to it for a decade so as not to break existing apps.

I don't know. The basic SQL model was thrown out by many of the vendors long ago. I know that doesn't make you happy but it is a fact.

If you want ANSI standard SQL there is always Teradata ;-) Or have they deviated recently too. You seem to do most of your work in SQL Server and you certainly can't lay any claim to ANSI purity there. And to point to one vendor and say "marketing lies, frauds, etc." without pointing to all of them is a bit disingenuous methinks. Anyone without enough IQ horsepower to read through the advertising claims for Listerine and anti-perspirants is certainly not capable of coding an application or writing an outer join.

Does a polar bear, under an appropriate coordinate transformation, become a rectangular bear?

I don't use a product because it adheres or doesn't adhere to specs created by a standards committee and as near as I can tell neither does anyone else. They buy what they think will do the job and I choose that which I think will pay the mortgage. Software as a religion complete with holy scripture is not likely to ever exist.
