Please explain 1NF in mathematical terms, using a standard mathematical definition of "relation" if that concept is needed in your definition. It really would be helpful for me to understand how 1NF and relation are connected mathematically. I see what Codd saw originally -- that relations might or might not be in 1NF according to his original non-mathematical definiton of 1NF, which I agree with you is flawed. I have not yet seen a mathematical definition that has any meaning.
