Of course, the result can be an arbitrary sequence of nodes and basic values. But that is as arbitrary is it can get: each node will represent a well-formed fragment. You cannot have a result with an unmatched opening tag, for example. Although, if you really wanted to, you could let the result contain a basic value that is a string that contains non-well-formed XML.
