Hi,

When designing tables for Oracle 8i or SQL Server 7.0, is there a preference to using a single-column primary key (like an Identity value or sequenced value) for tables or multiple columns?

How does this affect joins and balancing of b-tree indexes and the speed of index lookups?

I am to understand that optimizers (of Oracle and SQL Server) when choosing an index look at the distribution of unique values or column cardinality.

Any insight is appreciated.
