Some information about the environment should point you along in your quest.  Things like transaction load, availability, user load are a good starting point. But, judging by your post, you're already behind the 8-ball. An ebay type database isn't just built based on input from a newsgroup. You have to figure ebay has a whole team of data analysts and DBA's to design a technical architecture to support a web based environment with some of the top user loads on the web.
